Christian Attitude Toward Money

Gospel of Prosperity
Christian Money-view

Today money is the medium of exchange for goods and services.  Money is necessary for us to live comfortable lives on earth.  Money enables us to purchase the things we want, desire, and need.  The Bible even says that, “Money is the answer for everything” (Ecclesiastes 10:10).  Because money is so powerful it can become our master.  According to the Bible, if we are not careful we can become a slave of money.  Jesus warned us of this danger:

“Don’t keep hoarding for yourselves earthly treasures that can be stolen by thieves.  Material wealth eventually rusts, decays, and loses its value…How could you worship two gods at the same time?  You will have to hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other.  You can’t worship the true God while enslaved to the god of money!”  (Matthew 6:19, 24 TPT)

Money is not a problem, it is neutral and not evil in and of itself.  It is trusting in money for survival rather than God that creates the problem.  Money can occupy us to the point that we become devoted to it; doing whatever necessary to obtain enough to meet our basic needs.  Money can become the decision-maker in our lives and rule over us, rather than God.  This is completely against what God’s Word says concerning money.  God said in His Word to trust Him as the One who gives us the power to create wealth.  He is the Source from whom we are enable to acquire wealth.

“But REMEMBER that the LORD YOUR GOD gives you the power to gain wealth, in order to confirm His covenant, He swore to your fathers, as it is today.”  (Deuteronomy 8:18 HCSB).

“Loving money is the first step toward all kinds of trouble.  Some people run after it so much that they give up their faith.  Craving more money pushes them away from faith to error, compounding misery in their lives.”  (I Timothy 6:10 TPT)

“Don’t be obsessed with money but live content with what you have, for you always have God’s presence.  For hasn’t he promised you, ““I will never leave you alone, never!  And I will never loosen my grip on your life!””  (Hebrews 13:5 TPT)

When we trust in God as the power to get wealth, our lives become occupied with Him and not money.  We are no longer money-chasers.  We become money magnets acknowledging God as our Source of prosperity and success.  When we put God, His kingdom, and what is right first—all the things we need will be provided for us in abundance.

“So above all, constantly chase after the realm of God’s kingdom and the righteousness that proceeds from him.  Then all the less important things will be given to you abundantly.  Refuse to worry about tomorrow, but deal with each challenge that comes your way, one day at a time.  Tomorrow will take care of itself.”  (Matthew 6:33-34 TPT)

Now that we have established a proper attitude toward money, we must learn how to maintain this attitude. What do we with our money?  We must let money know who the boss is.  In our flesh, we want to hoard money, but to keep it in its place me must learn to GIVE IT AWAY!  Abram (Abraham) learned this lesson after returning from a victorious battle in which he rescued Lot. He had acquired great spoils from the victory.  At that time, Melchizedek, appeared to refresh Abraham with bread and wine and to bless him.  In return, Abraham offered to Melchizedek one-tenth of EVERYTHING.  Through this offering to Melchizedek, Abraham blessed him.

Abraham was so in-tune with God as his Source of supply that he knew what to do to keep wealth in its place.  By offering 1/10th of all that he had, Abraham transferred all of his wealth over to God’s kingdom and authority. Once under God’s jurisdiction, Abraham’s wealth was protected with a promise.

“Bring the full tenth into my storehouse so that there may be food in My house.  Test Me in this way, says the Lord of Hosts.  See if I will not open the floodgates of heaven and pour out a blessing without measure.  I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not ruin the produce of your land and your vine in your field will not fail to produce fruit, says the Lord of Hosts.  Then the nations will consider you fortunate, for you will be a delightful land, says the Lord of Hosts.”  (Malachi 3:10-12 HCSB)

The tithe brings with it several blessings:

  • It opens floodgates and then blessings are poured out. This does not necessarily mean more money, but it does mean more blessing…more of what we need at any particular time.  It could be more grace, more revelation, more peace, more joy, more love, etc.  Tithing is connected to living the blessed life by having any and all of our needs met in abundance.
  • The devourer of our finances will be rebuked by the Lord Himself. Any attempt to consume our finances will be stopped by God, our Provider.
  • Our source of income will never cease producing. We will always have more than enough for ourselves and plenty for others also.

The tithe demonstrates our trust in God as our Source. We eventually realize that all our wealth comes from God. We then cheerfully offer it to meet the needs of God’s priestly servants as they minister to the needs of God’s people.  We become channels of blessing to others.

Beyond tithing and the blessing that comes with it we must learn to use our money as seed to sow for a return harvest.  Our sowing money beyond the tithe is what multiplies riches back to us. What we sow will ALWAYS grow and produce an abundant harvest so that we can give more and more to advance God’s kingdom and bring glory, thanksgiving and honor to God.  When we realize the true purpose of riches we will be a trusted channel for God to flow abundant riches through.  Our goal will no longer be wealth in and of itself, but supplying riches to God’s kingdom and His move on the earth today.  Glory to God for this honor and privilege!

“This generous God who supplies abundant seed for the farmer, which becomes bread for our meals, is even more extravagant toward you.  First he supplies every need, plus more.  Then he multiplies the seed as you sow it; so that the harvest of your generosity will grow. You will be abundantly enriched in every way as you give generously on every occasion, for when we take your gifts to those in need, it causes many to give thanks to God.”  (2 Corinthians 9:10-11)

A few years ago, it was prophesied over me that I was to be a paymaster and that money would flow to me from the north, south, east, and west.  My first question was, “What on earth is a paymaster?”  Here is a definition from Wikipedia:

The primary purpose of a paymaster is to receive fees in escrow by buyers in a large transaction, and disburse to the sellers and brokers of the transaction.

A paymaster is a neutral third party and has no knowledge of any particulars of the transaction. They handle the incoming commissions, and then disburses the funds accordingly. In return for their services the paymaster charges a small fee, which is paid directly to them out of the commission proceeds prior to disbursement.

Based on this definition I am realizing that all wealth that comes to me is God’s.  It is my duty to distribute that wealth as HE sees fit.  In return for my faithfulness He gives me a generous “commission” for my services.  What He supplies to me allows me to boast in Him!  His generosity toward me becomes a testimony of His abundant goodness.  God is glorified in every way and by all parties involved.  Now I say, “We are all paymasters and it is our duty to become channels of God’s riches to those in need, whether individuals, ministries, organizations, etc.  As God directs, so we distribute what He generously supplies to us.”

Hopefully by this teaching we will begin to have a proper money-view.  This is a life-long and exciting journey of knowing God, His economy and having the privilege of participating in it.  Having and maintaining the proper attitude toward money is vital to our becoming successful in the financial realm and beyond.
