The Go-Giver – The 5 Laws of Stratospheric Success

The Go-Giver

Years ago, I was introduced to an amazing book, The Go-Giver by Bob Berg and John David Mann.  I have read this book many times since then and have used it in a church small group I was teaching. I developed a course called SUCCESS—IT’S OUR CHOICE.  The reason I chose this title was because success IS our choice.  Anyone can succeed.  One must decide that is what they are going to do and “just do it.”

I have taught SUCCESS—IT’S OUR CHOICE twice and I am currently on my third session.  During my first session, I spend two weeks sharing the concepts of the Go-Giver.  Each participate was to get the book, read it, then we would discuss and practice what the book taught.  All my “groupies” loved the book and got a lot out of it.

Therefore, I decided to share the laws contained in this book with you.  Laws, that if practiced, will change your life both professionally and personally.

The book shares five laws of success.  These laws are simple, but when put into practice will take you to success levels you only dreamed of!  I personally like the concept.  Success is good, but stratospheric success is awesome!

The first law of stratospheric success is The Law of Value, which teaches that your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.  For example, any dealer can sell a car, but the ones that give more in value than their competition end up with the most business.  They may offer a car, but they also offer other things of value along with it such as free car washes, discounted services, free oil changes for a year and other such things.  They call periodically to make sure the customer is happy with their service.  It doesn’t cost much to provide those value-added services, but they mean a lot to the customer and that equates to good word of mouth reports and referrals.  Think about what you can do to offer more value to a customer, or anyone for that matter, and watch your business grow along with your bank account.

The second law of stratospheric success is The Law of Compensation, which states that your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them.  Everything you will ever want in life will come through other people.  Every dime you get will be given to you by someone who wants something that you can provide for them.  The secret is to find a way to serve a lot of people and to service the very well.  Answer these two questions:

  1. What do I have of value to serve the people?
  2. Is there a way I could serve MORE people?

Stratospheric law number three is the Law of Influence.  This law tells us that your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first.  I am in the sales profession.  One thing I have learned is, when with a customer, I must focus on THEIR needs, not my commission check or what I will get out of the encounter.  Customers can tell when you are under pressure to “make a sale.”  Believe me, when your focus is on you and not them, you will lose every time.  Focus on the other person because that is all the other person cares about.  They want their needs met and when you take care of their needs your needs will automatically be taken care of.  I like the way Zig Ziglar said it, “You can have anything in life that you want if you help enough other people get what they want.”

I love the next law and I think you will too.  This law is a bit harder to follow, but here it is: The Law of Authenticity.  This law states that the most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself.  Many people suffer from low self-esteem.  As a result, they try to be like someone else.  They become actors, and no one likes a fake.  You don’t have to act, God made only one of you and He likes you the way you are.  You are one of a kind, unique, and everyone knows that a “one of a kind” priceless.  For years, I played the actor.  I tried to be and do what was expected when in the presence of certain people.  I also wanted to be like others that I thought were “better than me.”   How dumb is that!  Being a copy is not nearly as valuable than being an original.  Learn to be yourself, be authentic.  People will fall in love with you…the genuine you. Give people the chance to know the authentic you.

The Law of Receptivity is the fifth and final law.  Frankly, this was the hardest for me.  This law says that the key to effective giving is to stay receptive to receiving.  How many times where you offered something and felt guilty about taking it.  You said, “Oh, that’s ok, you keep it.”  We almost blush when offered something.  For me, it’s easier to give than to receive.

Let me tell you something.  Giving AND receiving form a circle.  This circle is broken when we are unwilling to receive.  When someone offers you something and you receive it, you end up BLESSING THEM.  Their gift was a sowing.  A sowing that, if received, would result in a blessing to THEM.  In a bad way, the “buck” stopped with the one broke the circle, the flow of blessing, by not receiving.  Simply stated, giving and receive form a flowing circle.  When either is stopped, broken, or refused, the flow stops.  Be willing to give, but also be willing to receive.

THE GO-GIVER is an amazing book.  It’s written in a parable form with a cast of characters that that will keep you turning the pages until the book is complete.  I strongly encourage you to pick up a copy and read it and even study it.  These laws, when followed, will change your life and take you to stratospheric levels of success.
