The Power of the Tongue

Watch your tongue

“Sticks and stones may break my bones but names (words) will never hurt me.”  I can remember saying this rhyme as a child.  Eventually, however, I learned that words do hurt.

Words are very powerful, more powerful than we realize.  Did you know that you can be surveilled by cameras night and day and it’s legal?  However, if your voice is being recorded, you have to be notified of that fact.  Apparently, what we say can be more telling and is of more value than pictures!  For instance, you look at a picture and interpret it as to what you think it means.  Then I come along and change your perception just by telling you a different story.  I can easily use my words to change the way you think about that picture when you look at it again.  Words create.

Words are potent because they create energy.  As breath passes over your vocal cords and you form words with your mouth, those words become energy and that energy produces matter.  As this matter builds up over time, a solid picture develops based on what you have repeatedly said.  This isn’t nonsense, it’s how God created us to operate!

Not only do words create energy, but our words create a frequency.  In Columbus, Ohio there is a radio station called 104.9 The River.  For me to pick up that station I have to tune into its frequency on my radio.  Once I have tuned into the proper frequency, I can hear the music I desire.  The same thing happens with our words.  Our words have frequencies that are searching for matching signals to bring to us the reality of what we are saying.

The Bible says that life and death are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21).  It also says that we will have what we say (Mark 11:23).  Then Jesus said that we will be judged by the words we say.  Our words will acquit us or condemn us.  How?  By our own words we create the kind of life that we live.  All Jesus has to do is look at our life and He will know exactly what we have been speaking.

We were made like God.  As His words create, so do ours.  When the words we speak match God’s word, we create a blessed life.  When the words don’t agree with God’s word we create a mediocre, plain, mundane life.  The world is filled with people who have this testimony simply because they don’t understand the power of words.

These days my wife and I are much more aware of what we say.  We are practicing speaking in agreement with God’s word.  When we catch ourselves speaking careless words we repent and quickly declare what God says.  We do this because we have experienced the difference our words make.  We don’t confess sickness or lack.  There are days when we may not feel good or have a financial need, but we don’t dwell there with our words.  Instead, we confess what the Word of God says.  God says He has removed all sickness from us (Deuteronomy 7:15) and that by the stripes of Jesus we are healed (Isaiah 53:4-5; 1 Peter 2:24).  He also promises that no harm will come to us and no plague will come near our home (Psalm 91:9-10).  God’s Word says that He wants us to increase in abundance and multiply our gold and silver. He will give us the power to prosper (Deuteronomy 8).  He desires to bless all the work of our hands and He delights in our prosperity (Deuteronomy 28).  He promises to open the floodgates of heaven and pour out a blessing without measure for the tither. Our businesses will never fail to produce fruit and He himself will rebuke the devourer of our finances (Malachi 3:10-11).

God is eager to bless us, but our words can stop Him if they do not agree with what the Word of God says. He is limited by the Law of Confession that He Himself put into place.  Folks, your words matter!

It is vital to know what God has to say about every area of our life.  We can discover this in His written Word and through the instruction of the Holy Spirit.  Words are powerful, therefore be a good steward of the words you say.
