The Blessing, Curses, and the Power to Choose

Blessings in Abundance

What does it mean – to be blessed?  Christians use the word blessed or blessing all the time, but have you ever thought about its significance?

To understand the blessing, we must look at the genesis of the word “blessed” as recorded in the Bible.  God first used the word in Genesis 1:28: “God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it.  Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth.’”   I have emphasized some words in this verse that are very important. Blessing has to do with words.  God blessed…and said!  What God SAID became the blessing.  This one verse should rock your world, because words are powerful…all words!

According to Genesis 1:28, to be blessed was to be fruitful, multiply, fill, subdue, and rule!  That fires me up!  This was God’s original blessing for us!  Our life is meant to be fruitful.  All we have is meant to multiply and be full.  We are destined to subdue our enemies and rule over all things.

Later in Genesis God spoke something else after Adam and Eve’s disobedience to God’s Word.  That speaking became a curse:

Then the Lord God said to the serpent:

“Because you have done this, you are cursed more than any livestock and more than any wild animal. You will move on your belly and eat dust all the days of your life.  I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.

He said to the woman:

I will intensify your labor pains; you will bear children in anguish. Your desire will be for your husband, yet he will rule over you.

 And He said to Adam,

“Because you listened to your wife’s voice and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘Do not eat from it’: The ground is cursed because of you. You will eat from it by means of painful labor all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. You will eat bread by the sweat of your brow until you return to the ground, since you were taken from it. For you are dust, and you will return to dust.”

From God’s mouth, different WORDS came forth.  Instead of blessing, a curse was spoken, a curse BECAUSE of sin.  God’s law, His command, was ignored and the curse ensued.  God made good on His word to Adam about not eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.  The curse came BECAUSE Adam disobeyed God.  It wasn’t God’s choice, but Adam’s.  Never forget that!

However, in Genesis 12 we see a man who would trust God again, who would obey His word and because of that God blessed him:

The Lord said to Abram:

“Go out from your land, your relatives, and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, I will bless you, I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, I will curse those who treat you with contempt, and all the people on earth will be blessed through you.”

Through Abraham the blessing was restored.  What restored it?  Abraham’s FAITH!  Abraham BELIEVED God and it was accounted to him as righteousness.  Abraham’s faith was confirmed by his actions.  He obeyed God and did what God said. Through Abraham’s seed, the promised blessing has reached even us!  We are recipients of the same blessing through Abraham’s seed, Jesus Christ.

Through Adam we were cursed, but through Christ, Abraham’s seed, we are blessed with the SAME blessing Abraham received.

“Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law by BECOMING a curse for us, because it is written: Everyone who is hung on a tree is cursed.” (Galatians 3:13)

“And if you belong to Christ, then YOU are Abraham’s seed, heirs according to promise.”  (Galatians 3:29)

So, what is the blessing of Abraham?  The blessing of Abraham is the promised Spirit that we receive through faith in Jesus.  The Spirit is eternal and unites us with the very blessing that Abraham enjoyed, which is outlined in Deuteronomy 28:3-14.  This blessing states, in a nutshell, that we will be blessed wherever we go and whatever we do.  Everything we have will be blessed.  Everything our hand touches will be blessed. Our enemies may come against us, but will scatter and flee in multiple directions.  We will be established as God’s people and those who look at us will stand in awe of us.  This blessing includes multiplication and abundance.  It includes health and states that we will ONLY move upward and never downward. The eternal Spirit brings this blessing to us as we live here on earth in the physical realm.  In the Spirit, time and space mean nothing.  Time and space collapse into the NOW.  There are no limits.  The only limit is our unbelief!  If we are experiencing anything other than the blessing, we have a problem!  What are you agreeing with?  What are YOU speaking?  Is your speaking in agreement with His blessing?

The blessing or curse all have to do with SPEAKING.  The Bible says that “Life (blessing) and death (the curse) are in the power of the tongue. (Proverbs 18:21).  Because we were made in God’s image and likeness, we have the same abilities He has when it comes to words.  Our speaking does what His does.  Our speaking brings life or death, the blessing or the curse.  We must be careful about what we say.  Look at your life.  Is it blessed or cursed?  Your life manifests what you have been believing and saying.

The Bible says that God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in Christ. (Ephesians 1:3)  The Greek word for blessing is eulogtos, where we get our word eulogy from.  Eulogy means, “well speaking.”  Eulogies are often spoken at funerals.  However, why only speak well of the dead and not the living?  We must learn to speak well of ourselves and others, based on what God has said.  When we do, we enjoy the blessing!  When we speak stupid stuff that is not in agreement with God’s word we live a cursed life.  A cursed life is one of sickness, disease, lack, poverty, depression, pressure, fear, anxiety, you name it!  The blessing or curse boil down to who you believe: God or Satan.

Satan is the deceiver who wants to steal your blessing, kill, and destroy you.  He does this by taking your attention away from God’s Word and causing your five senses to take over.  Isn’t this what he did in the garden?  He attracted Eve through her five senses and then deceived her with cunning words.  She forgot God’s Word and focused on what she was feeling and hearing from her contact with the enemy.  The devil’s tactics have not changed!

What must you do?  You must say this: “Curse of the law, I am not longer under you.  In the name of Jesus, you must go NOW!  I am freed from you in Jesus!  I am blessed of the Lord.  I am blessed and highly favored.  I am blessed with believing Abraham. That is God’s Word and I am in agreement with Him!”

Stop cursing your life and that of others with your words.  After declaring the above, start speaking the blessing.  Go to Deuteronomy chapters 8 and 28 and decree the Abrahamic blessing they reveal over your life.  Go to Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians and decree what God revealed about you through the Apostle Paul.  There are literally thousands of verses in the Bible that reveal the blessing of Abraham to us.  There is picture after picture of what the blessing looks like in the lives of those who BELIEVED.  Remember, Abraham was blessed and made righteous because of his faith. The same applies to you.  Don’t remain under the curse, any curse, because you do not have to.  You are blessed through Christ with the blessing of Abraham! Amen!
